Music itself is more but sheet music, written in a common syntax, is an
example of the syntax. That being said, the "feel" of music is something
that is very hard to convey in written form. Some instruments like the
didgeridoo have no syntax for conveying a song. The syntax most musicians
are used to is the treble and bass cleffs with standardized notations for
whole, half, quarter notes etc. The Italians and Spanish contributed
heavily to many of the words used to describe certain characteristics (words
like "forte" etc). All latin in roots. (01)
The earliest example of music notation is often thought to be Cuniform
script which dates back to around 2200 BC. (02)
Nevertheless, there are shortcomings of the standard classical notation.
Guitarists and bass player have developed their own called Tab (short for
tablature). It can convey more specific pragmatics and has a natural
language extension point to convey new ideas such as hammer ons and pull
