At one time within the Ontology and Taxonomy Coordinating Working
Group we had a discussion of "semantic interoperability" and the
result was to create a "glossary" page for use of the ONTACWG, to
permit contributors to clarify the intended meanings when they use
particular terms. There is only one entry, with three proposed
definitions:    (02)

Anyone who feels there is a benefit in defining terms can add to that
glossary, and the definition will be there for all to see and discuss.
The glossary structure can be elaborated to accommodate contextual
restrictions (this is a Wiki). I think this is useful in any case
where there is potential disagreement as to the meanings of some term
we use in discussion -- we can record the intended meanings precisely
and recognize exactly where there may be differences. It may be also
useful to add terms that are not controversial, but only for novices
unfamiliar with the terminology. In that case a non-controversial
definition can be copied from Wikipedia or some other free source.    (04)

Bill and Paola,    (07)

A glossary can typically have many different definitions and meanings
for the
same entry, and each term and definition can be contextualized. The
glossary
could be both inclusive and distinguishing. I'm involved in a project
to
develop an inclusive glossary of economic development - perhaps a bit
more
extensive, more controversial and with potentially more significant
impacts than
a glossary of ontology terminology.    (08)

The reason that I like Paola's idea is that it will provide a
practical, stable
source to help people see these issues, to make their contributions and
review
others'. In fact, I think it would be helpful to use some of the
'ontology'
related categories that were proposed/reviewed last year to help
contextualize
the glossary entries.    (09)

Best regards,
