It is not directly related but the discussion reminded me of an 
interesting paper about "liquid computing" I read. It is mainly about 
spiking neural networks and analyzing time series but it has some 
interesting ideas in general - like how to use a cup of coffee for 
computing purposes :) They build on top of a so called Liquid State
