Of course not.    (02)

There are fundamental reasons why not: Vendors pay lip service
to open standards, but they deliberately obfuscate their systems
to lock in their users.    (03)

Especially for vendors that dominate the market, the primary
directive is the advertising slogan for the "Roach Motel":    (04)

"It's easy to check in, but they can't check out."    (05)

Microsoft also uses the Roach Motel strategy. Since Oracle understands
that strategy very well, they develop their own products on Linux and
port them to Windows and other OSes.    (06)

Side note: Some of the worst headaches with Windows result from the
strategy by Bill Gates to prevent Windows 3.1 and 95 from running
on top of IBM's OS/2.    (07)

But he outsmarted himself -- that strategy prevented Windows 95
from running on top of Windows NT. The problems still persist
in the difficulty of installing and uninstalling software on the
latest and greatest versions of Windows.    (08)
