But the fact of the matter is that you should be able to cross reference 
data across DBMS products. The data doesn't belong to the DBMS product,

Yes, and Microsoft has/is imploding as a result of this strategy, due to 
the combined effects of the Web and Open Source. Microsoft has become 
irrelevant i.e., they don't control the pulse of the software industry 
anymore. Imagine making that prediction 20 years ago?    (011)
