Dear Colleagues, (01)

I am on the Policy and Planning Committee for ISO TC184/SC4 amongst other
things, and in that role I get to review many proposed standards that
potentially impact our work. The approach I take in giving my
recommendations is one of triage. You can divide standards into three: (04)
1. Those that are well conceived and fulfil a well defined need.
I recommend we support them and use them. (05)
2. Those that are misconceived and are unlikely to be useful.
I recommend that we state our concerns to the developers and that thereafter
we ignore them. In particular we do not criticise them in public, that gives
them publicity, we want them to die quietly. (06)
3. Those that are nearly good, and are relevant to our field.
I groan when I see one of these, because it means we ought to try to get it
into the first category, and that will require work and commitment by us.
The initial steps are to see if we have someone who is prepared to
contribute and contact the community developing the standard and see how
open they are to the contribution we could make. No point bashing your head
against a brick wall. (07)
Bottom Line
Don't talk about the standards you don't like, you give them oxygen just by
doing it. If they are not useful they will not be used, let them die
quietly. (08)
