I noted in the discussion of 4'33" that there were no vocal arrangements
for it. Below is my first attempt for soprano - something I wrote:

Thus inspired I tried a setting of a poem by e e cummings (for baritone)    (02)

I think what these settings suggest is that although the Cage piece is
without semantics, it has both syntax and pragmatics (hopefully, in the
case of my settings, a smile) but that it relies both on context and
contextual knowledge to make sense - i.e. the semantics, if any, are
inferred (you need to know the poetry of e e cummings to understand the
second half of the joke).    (03)

My concern with the Semantic Layer pizza (the reference is to one of the
recurrent introductory examples for ontologies) is that it is being
constructed without explicit reference to pragmatics. A version of this
issue appeared today in the OASIS-open thread for Emergency management:    (04)

The question here is about the meaning of conformance in relation to
hospital bed availability, which is at least a life and death matter.    (06)

PS I also tried a setting of Wittgenstein's Tractatus, but only the
final section worked.    (08)
