I hate to prolong this thread by adding more, but I'd like

As I said many notes ago, if Cage's 4'33 had an opening sound
followed by silence and then a closing sound, one could say it
was a composition that included that period of silence. But if
there is no sound at the beginning or the end, there is nothing
but a silence that has no delimiters. (03)
That would be like talking about an imaginary hole that is
delimited by nothing but other holes. You can define such
a thing, if you wish, but then you're not using the English
word 'hole' as people normally use it. (04)
