For semantics / pragmatics.... things have moved
on a bit since some of the seminars people report
having attended. (01)
I would recommend Asher & Lascarides (2003) 'Logics
of Conversation' for more revealing analyses of
these kinds of terms. There we can look at the
difference in semantics and pragmatics (which should
never be confused as 'levels' of a linguistic
system: they are too different (ontologically))
according to logics of different expressivity.
The logic of semantic interpretation is necessarily
more restricted (so that we can get from utterance
to semantics without falling into some computational
blackhole). The logic of discourse interpretation
is a bit more powerful, employing abduction. These
are all separate from unrestricted reasoning, which
if applied in discourse would mean that no one
would ever finish their (02)
All in all an excellent demonstration of the importance
of hybrid (logical) systems. (03)
