Dave,

when we look at DB itself (for ex. at its schema, not UI) the first question is What the hell does it mean? And we can't get it without developer usually. See example in our article.
When we look at knowledge we just get it:-)
In both cases we supposed to know languages (SQL, OWL, CL, ACE).

"Phil Pitt is a lifelong student of Knowledge Representation." does not have data, but "Somebody named "Phil Pitt" is a student of Knowledge Representation for 1 year." does.
In the knowledge a data is a meaning of value, I hope:-)

Alex,
Thank you for your insight.

So you think there is something inherent in the form
of data (stored in a database) that is different from the form of knowledge.

So how would you classify the knowledge in the English statement

"Phil Pitt is a lifelong student of Knowledge Representation."

and how would you classify the data in the same English Statement?

Alternately, could you explain why that is a bad English statement to use
as a basis for the inherent distinction you feel exists ?
