Pat, In terms of other treatments of this topic, it would be useful to look at Penelope Maddy's excellent "Realism in Mathematics" which attempts to answer the causal epistemic objections to mathematical platonism by positing the physical manifestation of mathematical sets, i.e., contending that pure sets do/can have spatial extent (and that that is how we in fact have knowledge of them). It has been some time since I read the book, but from what I recall she would not argue that abstract mathematical entities depend on physical manifestation for their existence, but they nonetheless do physically manifest themselves whenever we encounter a set of things. regards, Mike Pool On Thu, May 23, 2013 at 12:15 PM, Patrick Cassidy <pat@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: Name of thread changed to the more specific topic. _________________________________________________________________ Message Archives: http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum/ontolog-forum/ Config Subscr: http://ontolog.cim3.net/mailman/listinfo/ontolog-forum/ Unsubscribe: mailto:ontolog-forum-leave@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Shared Files: http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/ Community Wiki: http://ontolog.cim3.net/wiki/ To join: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid1J (01) |
