My question exactly. From the way your last statement read Paola, I can only think that you refer to a brain in a living state. In that case, study is limited to functional evaluation (with the occasional exception being those areas removed for pathological examination).
 
Study of tissue is typically not just a study of morphology. Often, a scientist is more interested in how the tissue behaves in tissue culture media. This may include evaluating hormone or neurotransmitter secretion or uptake, evaluation of electrical potential changes across cell membranes, or evaluating tissue growth or regeneration. under various physiologic constraints.

Paola,
When you talk about studying the brain as a whole are you talking about a
live, functioning brain in situ, or a whole dead brain?
