What I've found in numerous standards efforts is that the academic community
keeps the business community honest, since the business community too often
makes decisions based upon project, ownership, and political expediency (in the
heat of the moment) that can harm overall success. The academic community can
add elements that have high maintenance cost and low ROI. (01)
Thus the best efforts have outspoken defenders from both communities. (02)

True enough, but let's not establish an artificial barrier between "academic
research" and "business applications". If the academic research does not issue
in usable applications, it's a waste of time. The point of the academic
research is to provide proper theoretical foundations for building usable, real
world applications for building, sharing, and maintaining ontologies, just as
the calculus and Newtonian mechanics provide the proper theoretical foundations
for engineering applications. An engineer needn't be able to prove the mean
value theorem, but somebody had to in the course of getting the basic
mathematics and consequent applications right. (06)
