Hi Chris, (01)
Your work towards ontology methods and attention to qualitative issues is
one theme; and the pragmatics of academic and business work still creates
significant tensions for individuals trying to bridge the barriers,
artificial or "natural" between research and applications. (02)
Newton himself had some tensions, if Neal Stephenson's trilogy is an
accurate story of that 1660-1690 time frame. (03)
Thanks, (04)
Bob
(I am Mentoring a full time VP who is seeking a PhD in Ontology driven
Policy...with the requiste tensions ;-) ) (05)

True enough, but let's not establish an artificial barrier between
"academic research" and "business applications". If the academic
research does not issue in usable applications, it's a waste of time.
The point of the academic research is to provide proper theoretical
foundations for building usable, real world applications for building,
sharing, and maintaining ontologies, just as the calculus and Newtonian
mechanics provide the proper theoretical foundations for engineering
applications. An engineer needn't be able to prove the mean value
theorem, but somebody had to in the course of getting the basic
mathematics and consequent applications right. (08)
