True enough, but let's not establish an artificial barrier between
"academic research" and "business applications". If the academic
research does not issue in usable applications, it's a waste of time.
The point of the academic research is to provide proper theoretical
foundations for building usable, real world applications for building,
sharing, and maintaining ontologies, just as the calculus and Newtonian
mechanics provide the proper theoretical foundations for engineering
applications. An engineer needn't be able to prove the mean value
theorem, but somebody had to in the course of getting the basic
mathematics and consequent applications right. (02)
