Life is confusing. When they're working within the paradigms of
a particular specialty, scientists have the luxury of isolating
some aspect of life to study under controlled conditions.    (02)

But engineers have to apply science to the problems of dealing
with all the messy aspects of the real world. They can't control
the conditions. They have to build a bridge, dig a tunnel, or
drill an oil well under whatever conditions nature presents.
If necessary, they can modify those conditions, but only under
the constraints of budgets and deadlines.    (03)

This forum is addressing engineering problems that apply science
to problems of relating language, the world, and software systems.
We can't do much about changing language or the world, but we can
modify the conditions for designing, developing, and using software.    (04)

So that's what we're trying to do. And it can get messy.    (05)
