No, I don't either, but a lot of people want to interoperate with a lot of
other people, and I think that those of us who are in a position to create
the technology that can make it happen should make an effort to provide that
functionality.
The FO will be used by people who *do* feel a need for it, and others can
refrain for any reason of their choosing. An analogous situation exists at
international conferences. English has become a de facto standard of
communication there, and those who want to understand talks at international
conferences take the considerable trouble to learn the language. Those who
have no need to understand the language usually don't bother.
I have respect for anyone's gut intuition about the likelihood of things
happening in the future, but I think that my own intuitions are at least as
well founded. (02)
