Pat and
Alexander:
: an inclusive class of entities
that is tacitly implied or explicitly delineated as the subject of a statement,
discourse, or theory
And here is the first sense of the universe of discourse i suggested:
1. "universe or domain", the object of study, also
subject matter, content, matter, or reference class, the set of all entities to
be assumed or described, as ontological universe, mathematical universes,
physical universes, social domains or technological domains.
If we are arguing here just to argue, that's fine,
for we learn to reason by reasoning. But the Forum dedicated itself to
some high cause and activity, which seems increasingly drenching by offhand
debates.

Re. the universe of discourse, the point
is not giving a comprehesive definition, but to emphasize that this hybrid
construct has two faces: "universe" and "discourse." This semantic duality
is the source of confusion even for experienced minds. But if you
view the issue as simple, make your contribution, try and extend the
Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universe_of_discourse. Good
luck.
Me too.
Look at the Date: 1881. It is clear that Wikipedian should cite the
inventor.
Probably Charles Saunders Pierce, given the date and the fact
that whoever wrote it was writing in English rather than German. Also
the choice of the word "discourse" has a Piercian ring to it.
BTW, Googling "domain of discourse" and C. S. Pierce located
this gem:
which all the SWeb-bashers out there should read :-)
