you can use the quote colors add-on [1], where you can set the colors of 
the text font and background of each level, as well as set the whole 
formatting off (including the lines;  you'd thus see '>' signs rather 
than continuous lines).  however, this seems to work only for the 
preview window, and not for response windows (at least some of the
