In a pure technical realm, it may serve better to abstract this statement
beyond "words" to "tokens" or just use "expressions" as you do later. For
example, the syntax of XML is structured to allow machine processing of the
markup stream and does not require elements to be words. They are simply
tokens and at the level of abstract required for interoperability, words
have no place. Each is simply an array of character data/bytes which is
parsed and passed to whatever handlers are registered for that type of
object.    (03)

Many people still confuse XML with having anything to do with semantics (it
does not). The same goes for XML Schema. Both are purely concerned with
syntax.    (04)
