Dear Steve, (01)
The largest domain application is to day the planet itself (see IBM's
Smarter Planet, Cisco's Smart Communities), where our world and its cities
are complex socio-technical-natural systems, metasystems, systems of
systems, getting more intelligence, instrumentation and integration:
http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/CIT2011/index.php?p=Keynotes.
The domains indicated, Biomedical applications, Smart grids, Government
systems, are rather special technologies and subsystems, other bigger
systems are urban systems, transportation systems, water systems, energy
systems, ICT systems (Internet), social systems, economic systems, etc. (02)
The general properties of systems, as sets of elements/components and
interconnections, have been mostly studied by cybernetics, systems theory,
thermodynamics, and mathematics. (03)
But ontology looks as the most adequate tool to study any complexity system
as a unified whole of parts and relationships, its key invariants and
patterns, regardless the type of complexity. (04)

Subject: [ontology-summit] [Applications] Launching the conversation
aboutLarge-scale Domain Applications (06)
> Dear Colleagues,
> On behalf of the "Large-scale Domain Applications" track (Track 4)
> of the Ontology Summit we would like to share with you what this track is

> cross-track conversations will be talking about the practice of systems
> engineering, or quality issues, or about engineered systems in general.
> This
> track is designed to bring to the table some real-world examples from the
> perspective of any of a number of application domains. So, for example,
> one
