The term Deb used -BIM - refers to Building Information Model (and Modeling Management). The general term has been around in one idea or another since the late 1980's but under the National Institute of Building Science's (NIBS) building SMART Alliance - has been defined as an aspirational STANDARD for life cycle management of a building's information for the Architectural, Engineering, Construction, Owner, and Operator sector of the US economy (AECOO). Clearly a BIG System, and in need of more cogent systems engineering.

 

As an aspirational "standard", NBIMS 1.0 got traction with the major architectural-CAD software sector in 2007. Starting last year, a project group has been working on a more rigourous NBIMS 2.0. http://www.buildingsmartalliance.org/

 

 

 

Several of us on this list are involved in shaping NBIMS 2.0 and the ideas and ontology possible for NBIMS 3.0, as well as a glossary of terms and TOPICS (in the DITA sense).

 

Deb, do you want to expand on this or wait until after Wednesday's IMPLEMENTATION Team meeting?
