Bill and Avril, (01)
I certainly agree with that point: (02)
WA> To say the web is an "ontology" is nonsense. (03)
I would say that the web is an extremely useful resource. (04)
But I also agree with that point: (05)
AS> It feels obvious that the web in general will be
> the source of common-sense knowledge rather than Cyc. (06)
However, the experience that was gained from Cyc has been
very useful and will help to point the way toward better
systems in the future. (07)
AS> Do you think that Cyc will still exist in 50 years? (08)
Of course it will. It will be stored in some repository
somewhere. But there is no current software of any kind
that will be used for any practical purpose in the same
form as it is today. However, much of today's software
will help point the way toward future software. (09)
For some historical perspective, Fortran is 50 years old,
and the current version is still the most widely used
language for numerical computations. (010)
But I doubt that anything that might still be called "Cyc"
in 2058 will bear as much resemblance to today's Cyc as
the current Fortran does to Fortran I. (011)
