I do appreciate the effort that was put into the conference and would like to be able to endorse something.
I don't see the need for my endorsement of an internal document for a number of reasons that range from my lack of status as an academic to a concern about how "endorsement" might be treated by third parties. to a sense that my endorsement or lack of it will not affect internal use of the document.

Perhaps an abridged version could be created for public consumption that contains less of the raw discussion but captures the key finding and recommendations in a neutral, less argumentative tone.

A full endorsement by the community could help make this concise document useful as a reference in support subsequent work or funding requests by various individuals.

Ron,

I think your points are excellent ones - mainly relevant to the many people who are not in the primary target audience (as Peter points out).  While Peter's comment is true, the fact remains that a lot of people not in the target audience WILL read this document, and your points are valid for those people.

It is unfortunate we did not have your feedback  earlier, I probably would have voted to take it out of the document, for the reasons you state.  It can cause harm, and while the quotes are intersting and maybe inspirint to the target audience of people trying to make the case for ontology, I don't think they necessarily help  them do that, hence there would be no loss by removing the paragraph.

As far as endorsing the communique, I'm concerned that you may be throwing out the baby with the bathwater.    For me, endorsing the document does not mean I agree with each of the individual quotes.  The quotes are individual quotes whose purpose is to give a range  of opinions consider someone making the case can consider using.

If you feel comfortable with this interpretation, I hope you decide to ensdorse it.

In that case I am not sure where "endorsing it officially" fits in.

I certainly want to support those who have put in so much effort to
organize the latest thinking about the value of ontology.

I do have trouble endorsing the points in that last section.
