It might be worth noting that in between Kant/Otto Selz and Herb Simon both Bartlett and Jean Piaget used the Schema idea. Bartlett for memory and Piaget more widely as the basis of cognitive structure whose elements are schemas (aka schemata). Schema come about as a result of the interaction of biological maturation along with ongoing and cumulative experience. In his Genetic Epistemology view schema starts out as a general behavioral potential to engage in a class of actions. Examples Piaget used are grasping, sucking, reaching etc., which he distinguished from reflexes because of the variety of actions that can be achieved by them. They become increasingly the result of intention and thus the schemas get organized as part of purposive behavior and then internalized as operational schema, a form of thought supporting the development of logical intelligence etc. The child can use a schema to think of reaching for a toy besides having a motor schema to reach for the toy. Along the way the child develops a symbolic schema such as images and language to represent ongoing experience. Gary Berg-Cross, Ph.D.
