The video is not available in the UK so I argue that you are dealing with "citizen science". In the US and UK there are several successful research projects in this "field".
A good reading focused on Ecology can be the following. (http://www.esajournals.org/toc/fron/10/6)
My research group is also involved in citizen science where citizens are part of every stage in the research.
Have a look at this blog-post http://uclexcites.wordpress.com/about/

Crowdsourcing or volunteered based info is big in the geospatial domain.
Open Street Maps, for example, has been going for a while and providing good map into based on crowdsourcing. You can things like London streets at http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=5/51.500/-0.100

Mike Goodchild dicussed this idea in "CITIZENS AS SENSORS: THE WORLD OF VOLUNTEERED GEOGRAPHY" in 2008 (http://www.iapad.org/publications/ppgis/Goodchild_VGI2007.pdf) noting some of the underlying technology and approaches and the motivation of volunteers. Since then there has been some steady progress in its use in disasters such as the Haitian Earthquake which demonstrates the power of inline maps, volunteered data, mobile Apps etc.

The Ushahidi Haiti Project (UHP) was a volunteer-driven effort to produce a crisis map after the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti. You can see an evaluation of its effectiveness and plans for improvement such as how to train volunteers at:

John & All,

I happened to stumble upon the PBS feature called "What Will the
Future Be Like?"  - ref. (not 100% sure, maybe this is not available
everywhere): http://video.pbs.org/video/2303503361/

You might find the segment towards the end (between timepoints 0:39:51
and 0:51:36 in this programs that is 0:52:37 long) where they talked
about a couple of examples on "crowdsourcing' Science. It's intriguing
(in case you haven't had a chance to view that already!)

... there's obviously an opportunity for Ontology there, somewhere!
