Same issues, I came to discover those as I started my ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) adventures. Funnily enough, these are all still very much around and this where Linked Data is really a great solution, even beyond what ODBC enabled.

Let us not to forget that RDBMSs were primarily interesting experiments in the 1980s, slowly moving into serious production status in the early 1990s.
