RGC: True, there are no specifics in the IDEF0
context diagram or even in the decomposition
diagram; it only shows interconnectedness with
other activities, mechanisms, I/Os and controls.
However, any IDEF0 decomposition diagram can be
mapped into a PERT chart, and bound to specific
objects and dates to make the PERT chart whole and
acceptable to the project manager and planner.      (04)

The IDEF0 view is a generalization of past history
of plans glommed together to show which plans have
had valid implementations in the past. That is
what makes IDEF0 such a useful way of representing
knowledge in ways that can be mapped into future
plans.      (05)

It also fits nicely with the formal truth
criterion so that precedence can be represented in
readable and understandable ways by practitioners.    (06)

Instead of the IDEF0 requirement for a single
decomposition per context, I prefer a catalog of
alternative decomposition diagrams for the same
context, where appropriate for the specific
industry being planned. That way, toolware can be
developed to support planning with a useful human
interface while maintaining the formal structure
underneath for reasoning and explanation purposes.    (07)

MW: The link is one of metaphor, rather than say
specialisation/generalisation, which happens a lot
with words. But when that
happens you have to be very careful, because you
get the same word being
used for concepts in very different categories, as
you say.    (013)
