This is similar to what a good system analyst does.
Ask questions, look for inconsistencies in the answers, warn about 
problems in the SME's view of the universe and document the SME's 
understanding of the problem in a way that the SME can verify that the 
analyst understands what the SME has told him/her.
Over time an analyst can become a SME if they stay in one field long 
enough but as an analyst one has to be careful about assuming that you 
are a SME when you have only spent time talking to SME's not actually 
working in the field or taking formal training in the field.    (01)
