Till,    (01)

About 4 years ago, we investigated a classification system that we called a
"subject-area map", for categorizing both ontologies and vocabularies (since we
needed both). We looked at the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system
and the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC) system, the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system,
Chaim Zins' 10 Pillars of Knowledge classification system, and various
narrower, more specialized classification systems. By categorizing ontologies
and vocabularies, we hoped to pinpoint gaps, overlaps, etc., in the emerging
set of ontologies and vocabularies we would be using or developing. Note that
the LCC/LCSH, DDC, UDC are primarily lexical classificational systems, and so
e.g., upper/foundational and mid-level ontologies are not necessarily covered.
Because the LCC/LCSH, DDC, UDC, in particular are very large, one possibility
is to use just the upper levels of, say, the LCC/LCSH.     (02)

Basically, we didn't want to reinvent the wheel, and these classifications
systems are very well-developed. Though primarily for
subject/bibliographic/library purposes, by their nature these have to be
exhaustive.     (03)

Thanks,
