Hi Toby -

Yes - that focus on Performance is what I meant by "benchmarking", and Deb's extensive list of topics is aspirational - so needs some kinds of priority focus. Often a Roadmap, such as the OMG for the Financial Domain Task Force plus the Smart Building International's 2020 Roadmap and your NREL data exchange document for future efforts offers some content to chew upon.

I can provide links to each of these 3 anchor points if desired.

Thanks,

There are a couple different perspectives here.

-          Design-Build appropriately uses very structured and static models, as Mills hints at by deprecation.

-          Operations has a different set of challenges, as COBIE acknowledges by applying a very specific filter on BIM to hand off to a CMMS. A CMMS is a BIM, too, although not an IFC.

-          There are efforts underway to standardize the application of ws-calendar schedules to mission functions (i.e. material in the Program phase) to understand not just how much energy will be required, but when.

Legacy energy was based on all you can eat, all of the time. Future Energy anticipates volatile energy supplies as any number of intermittent sources are combined. Smart Energy is aware of the changing supply, aware of the business process /mission function schedules inside the[building] and takes steps to optimize outcomes based on both. This is a *quite* different task than mere efficiency.

For example, pre-consumption is a well understood path to such alignment, i.e., making ice water at night to cool with during the day. When to cool is dependent on supply, as indicated by prices, as well as efficiency, as indicated by, say, outside air temperatures. How much to cool is dependent on mission functions to be supported and when , and external weather. This combines 4 dynamic elements (price, nighttime weather, mission, daytime weather). Any storage is less likely to be thermodynamically efficient than no storage—but economic efficiency is the better goal, here.

And as to mission functions? They change, always. Hence Deb’s list.

Hi Deb,

Who is it that thinks that separate formalisms and tooling for semantic web description logic, procedurally sequenced process models, and aggregations of business rules provide an adequate conceptual framework for, let alone a practical methodological foundation for architecture/engineering/construction?

What does it take to support complex design-build processes that are goal-oriented, collaborative, dynamic, adaptive, self-optimizing -- and that deliver 5-10X improvements across the solution lifecycle -- development, operations, and ongoing evolution?

Hi Toby

In addition to smart grid applications, some existing ontologies an enterprise framework architecture for Architecture/engineering/products may want to link up to include the following - but would appreciate some feedback. The point is to identify a reasonable and applicable set:

CIDOC for cultural heritage

COSMO for primatives

Dublin Core

Friend of a friend

Gellish dictionary in addition to buildingSMART data dictionary

Geopolitical ontology

OBO for biomedicine activities in buildings (hospitals, laboratories, clinics including locations)

SWEET for earth and environment

UMBEL

As you know implementation so far with buildingSMART is in BPMN for processes. A reference architecture has been proposed in UML. I think we need to encode the standard hierarchy (from world to a bolt on a piece of equipment) in RDF plus OWL.

I have a couple sample problems but want to get "the idealized existing universe" in perspective first. For example, more precision is needed for location from lat/long to navigating a floor (aka storey) to a room, to a piece of equipment or sensor - then back out again to the block, neighborhood, state with corresponding application domains similar to places and spaces mapping science maps

I am very pleased to see this bubbling up this way. Several of us started a Building Services Performance ontolog group a few years back.  My vision was that it would address exactly these issues,

That effort turned into a more mundane cataloguing of spaces, and I lost interest, and fell into three years of smart energy.  It sounds from this thread, which that includes several of those original participants, that we are now ready to begin wrestling with this.

This is good.

I think a February conversation about how to produce a descriptive model of the problem system indicated by "connect energy, healthcare, emergency management, financial, and actually nature - the non man made aspects" would be useful. A result (caution, optimist) certainly would give the systemists, engineers and ontologists a grand challenge.

Likewise, it will highlight the semantics aspects and benefits of the situation somewhat responding to Deb's question, How to fix?

Such conversation will be more productive if we can get David Taylor (leading author of object technology) to participate. I will inquire.

Recapping:

Jack asks: What % of your need is satisfied by the BIM working group?

Deb believes about 30%...of need, and full scale smart cities (as the CETC-Sofi team is attempting to formalize) 5%

Would a Feb. conversation be helpful to consider how to think about "Benchmarking" these terms?
