That is certainly true. (02)
But the people who make laws -- citizens, voters, and the people they
elect -- must consider the long-term implications: ethics, justice,
the pursuit of happiness, the common good, a more perfect union,
opportunity for everybody, a balance between exploiting available
and preserving the environment for future generations... (03)
America is extremely lucky in having an excellent selection of
educated, ethical people with long-term vision at exactly the
right moment in history. But they weren't perfect, they fought
a lot, and they came up with a system that emphasized compromise
between different points of view. (04)
