Steve Newcomb, as I recall, invented HyTime ( hytime.org ) as an SGML
means of representing music; it's perhaps not surprising that a music
department would extend that investigation. HyTime would later become
the inspiration for XML topic maps and the later TMRM subject maps.    (01)
