Mass is one of the basic physical quantities listed in various physical units/dimension systems. It is not gravity-based (that is weight, not the same idea) and I think is the only one whose unit is defined by an actual object: the 'standard kilogram' is a lump of (I think) platinum which is kept under controlled conditions in Paris. Atomic Mass is something else (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_mass_unit): it is defined as one twelfth of the mass of an isolated atom of carbon-12 (¹²C) at rest and in its ground state.
