We had, on Thursday 13-March-2008, a superb session with invited
speaker Mr. James (Jamie) Bryce Clark, JD, BSc., Director of Standards
Development, OASIS, who gave a talk entitled: "Practical lurches
towards semantic interoperability: standards mash-ups in production
and in development." (01)
Through multiple case examples, Mr. Clark introduced us to the
organization, process, accomplishments and challenges of open
standards development work at OASIS. Jamie pointed out where semantics
has or could play an increasing important role in open standards. He
concluded by encouraging more collaboration between the ontology
community and the OASIS community. The talk was followed by an
enthusiastic discussion by all participants and our speaker. (02)
Pursuit of ontological standards in (i) building information
management standards, and in (ii) e-business document interoperability
(as suggested in Professor Dr. Asuman Dogac talk the week before) were
recognized as potential projects where we can bring the expertise of
the ONTOLOG and OASIS communities together, given that we already have
several members that straddle both communities. (03)
Thank you, Jamie, for sharing your work and insights and for such a
great session. And as always, our appreciations go out to all who
joined us at the event; especially for their contributions to the rich
discussion during the last segment of the session. (04)
Proceedings of the session are captured on our wiki page, at:

In particular, full audio recording of the session, as well as the
podcast of it, is now available -
see: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_03_13#nid1BER (06)
This contribution from Mr. Jamie Clark is adding yet another piece of
knowledge toward helping us bring about Ontolog's mission of advancing
the field of ontology, ontological engineering and semantic technology
through advocating their adoption into mainstream applications and
international standards. Thank you again, Jamie and everyone! (07)
Best regards. =ppy (08)

P.S. Again, we will be featuring the 5th Episode of the joint
NASA-Ontolog-KMWG "Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision
Support" next Thursday, 20-Mar-2008, with our friends from NASA doing
a Panel Session on "Organizing Science Knowledge for Discovery."
Register your participation (in our Thu 2008.03.20 session) if you
haven't already done so. See details at:

*REMINDER* (016)
Our Ontolog Invited Speaker Session by Mr. James Bryce Clark, JD,
BSc., Director of Standards Development from OASIS, on "Practical
lurches towards semantic interoperability: standards mash-ups in
production and in development" is coming up tomorrow, i.e. Thursday,
13-March-2008, 1.5~2.0 hours, starting at 10:30am PDT / 1:30pm EDT /
17:30 UTC.
(Ref. World Clock - (017)

) (018)
OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information
Standards), representing one of the most prominent standards community
of its kind (with more than 5,000 participants in 100 countries), is a
consortium that drives the development, convergence and adoption of
open standards for the global information society. Our invited
speaker, Jamie Clark, Director of Standards Development from OASIS,
will provide a report, from the open standards domain, on some of the
current battlefronts in the Knowledge Representation war to retrofit
meaning into electronic artifacts. He will provide us with a set of
pointers and indications of some virtuous activities; and will, in
particular, help encourage the semantic document interoperability
standards work that Professor Dogac alluded to at last week's session.
... Anyone interested in the topic, especially those who are now
working with XML standards and their implementations, and would like
to see how semantics will come into play, should come join us at the
session. (019)
*RSVP* by e-mailing <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> off-line if you are planning
to attend and haven't already responded. (020)
As usual, this session is free and open; so feel free to pass this
invitation along to others who may also be interested. We look forward
to having you at the session. Please refer to agenda and call-in
details on the session page, whose link appears at the top of this
message. (021)
