Dear Michael,

Thanks for your response. Here are some clarifications:

Ontology vs. bibliographic classification scheme

Knowledge 2008 is an ontology of human knowledge (HK), while Yahoo and DMOZ are bibliographic or rather reference classification schemes. In other words knowledge 2008 is based on a phenomenological analysis of human knowledge while Yahoo, DMOZ, LCC, DDC, and the like are are functional schemes designed for classifying resources. There are othe differences as well.   Note, however, that knowledge 2008 can be used for classifying Internet and bibliographic resources (see Portal to Human Knowledge)

Target users.

The project has diferent levels of abstraction and can be adjusted for different users in different context.  Currently, the knowledge 2008 website is a generic site that demonstrats the different applications of the ontology (map).

The basic map can be used in museums' websites, presentations, and guides aimed at the general public. It can be implemented in educational portals. The tree scheme can be utilized in academic portals, library websites, university portals, Wiki-based projects, bibliographic systems, etc.

The encyclopedic portal is designed for the general public. I linked the terms to Wikipedia. However, the scheme can be easily adjusted to other encyclopedias (e.g., Encyclopedia Britannica, Columbia Encyclopedia, and Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) designed for different users.

The Portal is designed for the general public (the orange arrows) and for academic and professional (the green arrows). The scheme can be easily adjusted by libraries and knowledge organizations to meet the information needs of their specific users.

Smart Search is a user interface of Internet search engines. Currently it is used for facilitating smart Google searching. It can be used for other search engines such as MSN. Moreover, I invite developers of Internet search engines to utilize the scheme for structuring search forms and search results.

Using the map in other R&D Project

I encourage researchers and developers of websites, digital libraries, information systems, Internet search engines, and R&D projects who wish to utilize the map to do so.  The map has several levels of abstraction. You may use the whole map, specified parts of it, and translate it to other languages, but you need a written license. Note that the map is copyright protected; meaning, it is not in the public domain.

If you have any questions regarding utilizing the map (scheme) in a specific project, please contact me via my personal email. Thanks.

Sincerely and all the Best,

Chaim Zins

I wonder also, what the particular niche is for this knowledge map, as opposed to others. For example, we used to have the Yahoo Taxonomy (maybe it is still used?), and we now have DMOZ which is a directory to web pages, and now we have yet another.

Important questions are:
  • who is this intended for?
  • under what circumstances is it ideal and why?
  • how does is compare to other similar resources?

Dear Chaims
thanks for sharing your kmap
I saw it first when I started collecting 'knowledge taxonomies'.
What I see is a 'view' of the knowledge world, which possiby reflect your choice of representation. It must have taken some thinking. I cannot tell whether it is useful, or right or wrong, cause I am not sure what are your background assumptions, where you are coming from and what you want to get out it. As a knowledge map, is nice to have one , thanks Whether I would map knowledge in the same way, I am not sure. How would I map it different I am not sure either. I dont think its going to be long before we'll be able to play around and intersect our view of the world with others. I think its a nice project. Could you send the link to the scientific study that you reference btw.
cheers

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

Knowledge 2008 is an ongoing R&D project aimed at mapping human knowledge and facilitating efficient information searching. The project is composed of 6 parts:

The project is based on a scientific study. Please feel free to reflect on the theoretical perspectives (see bellow) and the practical implications of the project.

If you wish to support the project, please do so by reviewing the sections related to your fields of expertise. Needless to say that I need your support.

For more information please see a detailed overview of the project:

Overview. A systematic map of human knowledge. The knowledge map maps 500 major fields. Human knowledge is composed of 10 pillars. Each pillar is divided into relevant categories and presents the relevant field. The map is an ontology of human knowledge, rather than a classification scheme.

Unique characteristics. To better evaluate the map let us look at its unique characteristics:

1. The 10 pillar structure, which is based on the Knowledge - Supernatural - Universe - Humans model is unique.

2. The distinction between categories of the map (e.g., Theory) and fields of knowledge (e.g., Philosophy of Knowledge) is unique.
Imagine that the Map mirrors a library. The pillars are bookcases. The categories are shelves, and the fields of knowledge are books. The Library of Human Knowledge has 10 bookcases, 100 shelves, and a collection of 500 books.

3. The Theory - Embodiment structure is unique. The map has a Theory - Embodiment structure. It is manifested within the map level, the pillar level, and the field level.

[in the map level: Pillar 1 is 'the theory' part of human knowledge (HK). It is composed of the meta-knowledge of HK. Pillars 2-10 are 'the embodiment' of HK. They are composed of our knowledge on the explored phenomena (the supernatural, the universe, the living world, and humans. In the pillar level: Each pillar has 'a theory' category. In the field level: Each field has 'a theory' sub-field (e.g., Philosophy of Medicine, Literary Theory, Philosophy of Art)

4. The categories of the map were formulated in this research.

Overview. A systematic portal to top quality resources. Currently, the portal includes hundreds links to top resources in all fields of knowledge.

Rationale.  Following Bradford's law (1934) it is assumed that for every field there are core resources that include the core knowledge of the field. The portal will include links to the core  resources in all the major fields.

Overview. A systematic user interface of Internet search engines. It is designed to facilitate an efficient information searching. Currently, it is implemented for Google search engine.

Rationale. Search words are essential for formulating effective search queries. Unfortunately, most searchers are not familiar with the relevant search terms. It is assumed that in every field there are main keywords that relate to the core knowledge of the field. The idea is to develop a systematic user interface that presents the main keywords in the major fields of knowledge.

Overview. A systematic portal to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia. The portal implements the knowledge map for facilitating systematic access to Wikipedia's encyclopedic articles.

Rationale. Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia. It is free and popular. Undoubtedly, Wikipedia is a significant international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary project despite the poor quality of many articles. Note that the map can be implemented in other encyclopedias.

A concise overview of the knowledge map.

An academic and professional forum (via email) on the theoretical and practical aspects of the project.

Looking forward to your response. Thanks.
