John,

I couldn't agree more.  The price point for Samian ODE Lite is low to make it affordable for researchers and students. Ideally we would release this level of product as a free demonstration of our richer product line (not necessarily open source), but we're just not there yet.  Also, the Common Logic repository and tooling market is very formative and we need to demonstrate some sense of a viable market.  This is certainly the case for companies like VivoMind and Kojeware, but I believe it is also the case for the SIO/OOR initiatives in general.  The only way to sustain these initiatives will be to establish an ecosystem of projects, products and services around them.  This is the measure of success that I plan to use to gauge whether or not SIO and OOR have been successful.

In terms of open source, the Samian ODE leverages a LOT of functionality provided by the Eclipse platform.  The work we've done is but a very small sliver of the work that has gone into the overall tool that we're delivering.  Pricing reflects our contribution of effort, so the end user is deriving a lot of value from open source in this case.  Low cost, a robust implementation and seamless integration with the other Eclipse development tools out there.  This sort of commercial use of open source will help us to bootstrap the infrastructure for SIO/OOR.

In terms of "defining standards for interfaces and logical foundations", how shall we start the discussion?  In terms of communication interfaces between loosely coupled components, much of my thinking has been based on the FIPA standards, but I'm certainly flexible on the subject.  Are the FMF interfaces defined sufficiently to contend with the FIPA interfaces?  I'm at the point where I need to make some architectural decisions in this regard and I would really like to point the ship in the SIO direction if possible.  Please let me know.

Cameron,

Since we (at VivoMind) are a small company that needs to make
a profit in order to survive, I understand the need to develop
a workable business model.

For commercial applications, most businesses and government
agencies would prefer to pay for software that is debugged
and maintained at an industrial-strength level.

But students and researchers who don't have huge budgets
should be able to start with a "lite" version that they
can use for simple projects.

One possibility is to produce well defined standards for
the interfaces and logical foundations.  Then we can have
a family of compatible products at different levels of
cost, performance, and functionality.
