Folks,

Consider adding a sentence indicating the wide reach of ontology into many sectors so that readers of the communique see relevance to their needs right up front.

"As a result, trained ontologists (whether that be a formal job title, a functional role, or implicit in the work of an organisation) are in ever greater demand. Ontological techniques and technologies are providing benefit across many sectors, including science research and application, government, business, industry, education and social media."

Best regards,
Michelle Raymond

Couple suggestions for shorter sentences and getting tenses to agree.
Original text is below with highlights at changes: red highlight is
removed, yellow is modified, green is added.

Practical ontology development is becoming increasingly important - as
witnessed for example by growing interest in the Semantic
Web. Ontologies that are properly developed can significantly contribute
to better understanding of diverse problem domains. Formal ontologies
provide processes and methodologies to model information in ways that go
beyond more limited scopes often encountered when modelling specific
applications or functions.

As a result, trained ontologists (whether that be a formal job title, a
functional role, or implicit in the work of an organisation) are in ever
greater demand.

Our concern therefore, is to recognise that the role of 'ontologist' is
a unique discipline that requires a distinct set of interdisciplinary
skills. As the demand for trained ontologists increases, we need to examine
and define the role of formal education and training in providing the
ontologists of tomorrow."
