I found the draft Framework as a well written and
smooth document, where its authors put a lot of effort and experience, what
should be recognized with gratitude.
But I also can see why John and some
other raising serious objections to the proposal; for as the guidlines for the
framework, it has several serious defects, specifically, in defining
of the subject and in setting the kinds of
ontology.
I suggest to find a way and consider a kind of
definition not isolating computing ontology from the mainstream as
something odd and extraordinary, out of the blue sky. It is plain that there are
fundamental ontology, a universal account of reality, and applied
ontologies, where the computing ontology belongs in.
So, in its inherent nature, computing ontology is also about
modeling reality or the world. Suggest to look at this definition:
Computing ontology is a formal representation of
reality and its domains, levels, and complex entities and is used to formulate
computable models, causal algorithms, and reasoning strategies about the world,
its parts and aspects.
Second, if to use a semiotic perspective, there must be
three dimensions at least:
1. Syntactic (ontology as a consistent symbolism of realities,
where all sorts of 'semantic web' ontologies with formal languages might be
included);
2. Semantic (ontology as a common code of meanings and
rules);
3. Pragmatic (ontology as smart artifacts, artificial
cognitive systems, and intelligent applications)
