In the 1970s I worked on a research project, called the Language of Data. I
cannot find any trace of this project or its results on the Web. The issue
that motivated the project was the observation that in the 1970 during the
oil crisis two government agencies reported results on oil imports into the
US on a monthly basis. The two agencies reported results for the same
statement “oil imports to the US in May 1978” which differed by a
significant amount. Was it because the terms were ill defined, were the
data collection methods bad, or what? The problem was to understand why the
answers were so different and how to build computer based information
systems that would not suffer from this problem. The investigation yielded
the fact that each agency actually had good data collection methods, and in
each agency the criteria for interpreting the results was carefully
documented the agencies policies and procedures. For example, each word in
the sentence about oil imports had a different meaning to each agency. For
example, US included Puerto Rico in one case and not in the other. The
definition of oil was one set of hydrocarbons for one agency. The other
agency used a different set. (01)
The problem was that when the information went into computer information
systems, all information about the meaning of the terms was lost. All the
remained was column heads such as US, May, Oil, etc. The Language of Data
project approached the problem from an information and library science
perspective. It made use of Ranganathan’s work as well as other metadata
methods for data classification. (02)
I later used the Language of Data ideas to design a metadata system for
management of large volume of technical data on an aerospace program. This
worked pretty well in practice. However, a metadata ontology would work even
better. But I never got to implement it. (03)

Faceted classification in Library and Information Science (LIS) is a
very simple but powerful idea -- specifying the subject matter of a
document by referencing multiple orthogonal taxonomies -- that was
formalized by Ranganathan. It has found a natural home in many
commercial web sites and in computer ontologies. (07)
Please note that the Wikipedia page on faceted classification is almost
worthless. A person who knew little about faceted classification took it
upon himself in 2007 to rewrite what was there and diminished the value
of that information. At that time, I asked a couple of the real experts
on the topic (Kathryn La Barre and Claudio Gnoli) to consider updating
