David (Eddy),

I refered to Gottlob Frége’s principle, the Principle of Compositionality which says that the meaning of a complex _expression_ is determined by the meanings of its constituent expressions and the rules used to combine them. To me this is a dogma vehemently defended by AI and MT people. What MT produces following that principle is still crap, making thereby MT a pseudoscience proper. It would not bother me, if this practice had not destroyed the translation profession and its practitioners. They are now offered work at lower rates to clean up the garbage that MT produces and required to invest in expensive software tools to maintain this trap. To be able to put those texts right, humans have to complete the job, the results of which are then stored and reused from TMs. So translators are working themselves out of the trade by adding their knowledge of context removed in the first place from dictionaries and other similar decontextualized/disambiguated collections.

Ferenc
