That depends on your ontology.  Aristotle had a hierarchy of
psyches, which included the "vegetative psyche" at the bottom.
Above that were psyches for sedentary animals like sponges,
mobile animals like worms, animals with sight, and rational
animals (human).    (03)

If you adopt Aristotle's ontology, a cabbage would have a
vegetative psyche.  The Latin translation of 'psyche' is 'anima'.
So you could consider a vegetable as a low-level animate being.    (04)

But anyone could invent fictitious characters with higher levels
of psyches -- the popular sponge named Bob, for example.    (05)
