Sharing knowledge does not mean that those who have such knowledge should be people with IT skills other than word processing basic ones. It is about the domain of knowledge, not the operational domain (operative skills). There is a clear separation between the two. When working with MD one always has to understand that first there is a time constraint, second there is an operational gap, and third that MDs always have to know what are they going to win by taking part in a community effort.

MDs have a tradition of sharing knowledge, they do it all the time. The evaluation of cases is a knowledge intensive task. The problem, of of many, is that there is a gap between the knowledge and the took to represent it and make it, thus, available to other communities (in this case computer scientists, philosophers).

I completely agree with your comment, however it is meant as a general
statement that one can not yet expect that every professional can or will
ever be able to have such knowledge or interest in computer sciences that
they as professionals are able to provide other communities with domain
related knowledge. I could write a complete funniest jokes library on the
computer skills of several of my MD collegues!

Hello Sven

Speaking as a nurse and a Doctor of Education I feel perhaps it is a
tad harsh to single out the nursing profession as having a lack of IT
knowledge. Surely this negates the adoption of an ontological
perspective to sharing knowledge??

Dear Peter,

I thank you for your honest reply. I appreciate your efforts and
interventions at ontolog (while driving to the hospital I am working
as
anaesthetist and listening to the previous podcasts). From a
not-even-novice-in-ontology scientific point of view, the need for
ontologies to increase efficiency and efficacy in data management and
communication is clear. However, the ontolog(y) community should be
aware
that tools, pathways and protocols are urgently needed to bridge the
gap
between the knowledge available in communities of practice and the
preparation of this knowledge for ontology engineers. Practically this
could
be translated in tools where consensus could be reached on definitions
and
words used during professional life. Use a wiki or something similar
seems
not a good answer considering the realistic lack of computer and ict
knowledge by most professionals in their highly professional
environment
(such as nurses on intensive care). I really hope some constructive
solutions can be developed for this 'neglected problem'.

Cheers

Thank you for the invitation, Sven.

Please allow me to take a rain check. For fear of not being able to be
adequately responsive, I have, up to this point, shied away from
getting connected into any social networks (other than being
subscribed to communities that I have already been involved in.)

Your invitation is valued and appreciated nonetheless. Do feel free to
contact me via email any time, though.

Thanks & regards.  =ppy
