Hi All,

Thanks very much for get it resolved. I was out yesterday so I could not help.
I used Powerpoint 2000. Maybe it is way too old ;)

Again, I want to take this opportunity to thank this forum for giving Oracle
this great chance to present our work.

Have a nice weekend,

Thank you all for helping resolve this quickly.

Acknowledging these folks:

  * PatrickDurusau for writing me about it first, and for confirming
that it is an Office 2007 compatibility issue

  * JyotishmanPathak for sending us the link to get our windows
machines patched

  * DaveMcComb for providing a (pre-2007) backward compatible version
of the slide

I have since uploaded 3 versions of the slides the following to both:

   http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/DatabaseAndOntology/2007-10-18_AlanWu/

... and also, temporarily (I'll keep them there for at least 2 weeks), under:

  http://ftp1.cim3.net/ontolog_tmp/

The 3 versions are:

  *   in pdf -
http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/DatabaseAndOntology/2007-10-18_AlanWu/RDBMS-RDFS-OWL-InferenceEngine--AlanWu_20071018.pdf

  *   in 2007 format or for patched windows-office -
http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/DatabaseAndOntology/2007-10-18_AlanWu/RDBMS-RDFS-OWL-InferenceEngine--AlanWu_20071018.ppt

  *   in pre-2007 compatible format -
http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/DatabaseAndOntology/2007-10-18_AlanWu/RDBMS-RDFS-OWL-InferenceEngine--AlanWu_20071018-alt.ppt

Hope that's enough to keep everyone happy!

Thanks & regards. =ppy

I don't know what Alan did it in, but I was able to open that slide

deck

with:

  Powerpoint 2000
  powerpoint viewer 2003
&
  OpenOffice 2.2.1

Anyhow, I now has the slides (same deck) over at the following URL as
well, could someone (among those who got the blank deck) please help
and check if that solves the problem:

(... or if the download still doesn't matter.)

Peter,

The slides work fine, but only if you use PowerPoint 2007.

I suspect they were created in Office 2007.

Whether save-as or otherwise, they won't display in the Office 2003

version of PowerPoint.

Hope you are having a great day!

Dave,

No it isn't. ... I just retried it myself. I'll send you a copy as

an

attachment (offline).

Could you do me a favor, though:

1. instead of just clicking (left-click, assuming you are using a
right-hand mouse) on the "slides" link at the session page

would you try using a right-click and then select "save target as"

and

save it locally before opening the slides. Let me know if that

makes a

difference.

2. please advise what platform and what application are you using.

3. ALL: ... this is interesting; and you are probably not alone.

Could

others who are facing the same issues please speak up and let us

know

what platform (OS; e.g. Windows XP) and application (e.g.

PowerPoint

2007) you are using, please (so we can see if we can correlate

that

issue to the OS or apps.)

Thanks in advance. =ppy

mini-series

session 11 - Dr. Alan Wu (Oracle) - 18-Oct-2007

We had, on Thursday 18-Oct-2007, a good size participation in

the

wonderful session of the 11th episode of the Ontolog series
(previously, "mini-series") on "Database and Ontology"

championed by

Dr. Matthew West (Shell International Petroleum Company).

Ontolog

co-conveners, Dr. Leo Obrst and Mr. Kurt Conrad were at hand to

open

and run the session respectively.
Dr. Melliyal Annamalai (colleague of Alan's and one of our

speakers

from the 28-Jun-2007 Oracle presentation) introduced our

speaker,

Dr. Zhe (Alan) Wu, who presented his talk entitled: "A Scalable
RDBMS-Based Inference Engine for RDFS/OWL."

Thank you, Dr. Alan Wu for your wonderful presentation and for
sharing your insight with the community. Appreciations to Dr.
Annamalai, Dr. Obrst, Mr. Conrad, and of course, Dr. West for
bringing this very informative session/series to us.

Proceedings of the session are captured on our wiki page, at:

http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2007_10_18

In particular, full audio recording of the session, as well as

the

podcast of it, is now available - see:

... Once again, let us thank our colleagues at Oracle for their
wonderful work that is making a significant contribution towards
bringing ontology and semantic technologies into the mainstream.
Dr. Alan Wu's talk that he just gave, is adding yet another

piece to

the valuable body of knowledge on ontology and ontological
engineering that our community is building together. Thank you!

Best regards. =ppy
