Azamat, Peter and all last night I listened to John's talk, thanks a lot for that Then realised that most of the talks also have an audio, which is great. I am extremely grateful about this, since it allows me to listen in albeit async. Is there a way of wiping the bleeps off? (small price to pay but a tad annoying)
I will listen to all talks, cause they provide good food for thoughts. I will send questions on the list -
Couple of questions for John
1)I am generally not a fan of mixing good scientific advancements with proprietary technology, (I would like to see knowledge made public) although I do understand that even great scientists have to make a living (sad as it is).
I would like to understand more about the architecture of your technology. It works using analogy, right? How? I am not expecting you to show us the algorithms, cause this is what you sell, but I would like to understand how such engine is built, the kind of main components and functions, if you could, just at logical level. (even if at the moment you havent assembled it and it lies convenientely scattered so that only you can use it)
2) This is a very trivial remark: I am lecturing HCI to some undergrad, who have limited background and limited skills in english language, and I am trying to find good easy examples to explain reasoning such as induction, abduction, deduction. At times I even feel that I dont understand them so well myself, and get confused.
So when I saw your slides I thought that I am going to show them in class next week, but I am not sure I concur with your assumption following the induction example see below
My assumption, following you example 2 would be:
not only birds fly - would I be right? if so, I ll modify the slide and show it confident that I understand all the examples! thanks
PDM
1. Deduction. Apply a general principle to infer some fact.
Given: Every bird flies. Tweety is a bird. Infer: Tweety flies. 2. Induction. Assume a general principle that subsumes many facts. Given: Tweety, Polly, and Hooty are birds. Fred is bat. Tweety, Polly, and Hooty fly. Fred flies.
Assume: Every bird flies.//PAOLA ASSUMES: NOT ONLY BIRDS FLY 3. Abduction. Guess a new hypothesis that explains some fact. Given: Every bird flies. Guess: Tweety is a bird.

Dear Azamat,
Good idea ... glad you are highlighting that.
I hope we are already doing that ... as everything on these session are openly "published" on our wiki, and everyone has a standing invitation to "discuss" them further (in addition to that discussion we had synchronously during the session.)

Dear Peter, I do believe that John's and Matthew's talks could collect a huge crowd. But wouldn't be it more useful to publish and discuss all the interesting materials of the Ontolog mini-series ''On Database and Ontology'' on the
Ontolog forum to see if the contribution is a really ''key piece to the body of knowledge on ontology and ontological engineering''. Regards, Azamat Abdoullaev Paphos, Cyprus; Moscow, Russia
