Apologies for jumping into this discussion at such a late stage. In the
Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), we have been having a variety of
discussions related to semantics and information communities - centered on
what we call the ge-semantic web. The requirements (and issues) for
dealing the things geo from a semantic perspective cross cuts a number of
the applications identified on
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?TopFive#nidQKI . (01)
This is one reason that the OGC and W3C worked together to initiate a
geo-semantic incubator activity in the W3C. (public-xg-geo@xxxxxx) There
has also been considerable discussion on geo-semantics on the georss
discusion list. (02)
One of the issues we are struggling with is whether existing semantic
tools are adequate to deal with the incredibly interesting - and complex -
semantic issues facing the geospatial community (and by implication the
emergency services community). (03)
