Hello All (01)
>From my perspective the use of a taxonomy behind the building of a
conceptual data model has the additionaL role of being a key to
interoperability between related data models where this is considered
desirable and particularly in the context of data exchanges between external
partners - without which ebusiness and egovernment interchanges cannot work. (02)

datamodel? (05)
Kathy, (06)
Good question. The answer from my perspective is yes, on several levels.
First, I'd start by describing a enterprise data model. Generally, an
enterprise data model describes all of the organization's entities (data
being
usedhere in a very generic sense to cover all kinds and levels of entities)
and
the relationships among those entities. Second, a taxonomy - if defined
simply
and comprehensively as a structure used to organize information - can cover
flat, hierarchical, network, faceted and ring structures. (07)
>From my experience with both corporate/enterprise data models and
taxonomies
(all kinds), I see the following fits: (08)
a corporate/enterprise data model may use taxonomies to describe
different
types of relationships among entities
any model of a person as an entity - by definition leverages at least a
faceted taxonomy and probably others - simply to represent it fully in
the
corporate data model
a conceptual data model may use any type of taxonomy to describe the
relationships among concepts (which may be names of entities or may
simply be
concepts)
a corporate/enterprise data model may include representations of
taxonomies
as what we would call "master data stores" or "reference sources" -- for
example:
the enterprise data model may reference a classification scheme
(hierarchy) or a thesaurus (network) as a controlling source for the
relationships between two entities;
if there is an enterprise level scheme covering core metadata - this
could
be referenced as the controlling architecture of a metadata
repostiory;
if there is an enterprise business function scheme - this could be a
controlling architecture or backbone for workflow management (09)
I don't think - at least in my experience - you can have a
corporate/enterprise
level data model or a conceptual data model without using taxonomies. And,
any
such model should always reference any taxonomies you use to manage your
information or processes. (010)

This week, a member of our TaxCop (Taxonomy Community of Practice) group
posted this question. (014)
"I am working on developing an enterprise wide conceptual data model. I
wanted to know how developing a taxonomy is useful for the data model.? (015)
My background is microbiology and library science. I have only a vague idea
about what an "enterprise wide conceptional model" is. Since the membership
of Ontolog forum seems to be very technical, I would like to know how you
would answer this question? Here is some more background for the question: (016)
Here is what I have to do. I have several budgets such as Finance, Human
Asset etc. Now I am categorizing my Finance subject area into following
: (017)
Fund Management
Payment Management
Cost Accounting
Receipt Management
Asset Management
Now I can sub categorize any of these category , i.e. Fund Management is
categorized into following:
Account Structure
Budget
GL Account
Audit Finding
Available Funding etc
Now you can see, I am developing this category, so where is Taxonomy
here? Here is description of my Fund Management : (018)
"Funds Management activities capture the highest level of financial data
and summarizes and maintains account balances by fund structure. Funds
Management is also the primary tool for carrying out the Agency
responsibility of establishing a system and maintaining official records
for ensuring that it does not obligate or disburse funds in excess of
those appropriated and/or authorized. Information captures processes
involved with Funds Management include budget preparation, budget
formulation, funds allocation, budget execution and funds control." (019)
Does this description mean to Taxonomy?
