However, this assumes a direct line.  A real waterline is not always straight.  The hull of the ship is usually curved in at least one axis and the water that meets the vessels hull is affected by forces which create waves and adhesion.

Nevertheless, I understand what you are suggesting.

waterline plane, the plane of symmetry, and the outside of the ship;
- the classification of that point pair as a member of 30m.
