When letters are directly inside one another I don't think it's immediately clear to all readers that they are intended to be read as a string of characters i.e. a name (this is less of an issue if it's a name people have already heard of). Also when completely symmetrical, it's not clear whether, if they are to be read, they are read outside-in or inside out.

Something more boring but more obvious might be called for.

I have attached my proposal for the OOR logo. It was designed as a replacement for the BioPortal logo in the OOR sandbox. Aside from the obvious fact that it consists of the OOR letters enclosing one another, it also encloses something that suggests the symbol of registration. As one of the main purposes of the OOR is to be an ontology registry, this gives yet another interpretation of the logo.

The one disadvantage of the logo as it is now is that in some countries it is illegal to use the registration symbol without obtaining the right to use it from the trademark office of the country. The US does not seem to be such a country, but China is. Whether this would be a problem for a logo is unclear. As I understand it, the restriction only applies to the registration character. If it is a problem, then it could be fixed by altering the appearance so that it no longer coincides with the registration symbol.

Dear OOR community members,

A couple of meetings ago, it was suggested that we should have a logo
for OOR. Guess this is something we should have done back around when
we started (in 2008), but its never too late. Let's do it now.

Please take this message as a solicitation for designs of the graphics
that could give us a Logo (or Banner) that we will use as the icon to
represent the Open Ontology Repository (OOR) Initiative.

So, please send your proposals in, as responses to this thread, before
the end of this month (i.e. we're closing as of end March 2011.)

We will review what came through after that.

Thanks in advance.  =ppy
