Dear Members of the Ontology Summit Community, (01)
As the postmortem during yesterday's (Jan-18) organizing committee
meeting indicated, the Launch Event this year went really well.
Compared to previous summits, we are much further ahead (at launch)
than we have ever before. (02)
For those who want to revisit the material, or those who want to
"participate asynchronously," please note that the full proceedings of
the Launch Event (slides, chat-transcript, audio recording, etc.) are
now online. (As usual) They are accessible from the "Archives" section
from the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2013_01_17 (03)
We want to send our appreciations to all who were able to join us at
the session, and a huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to that
session. (04)
The track champions will be initializing the online discourse on the
[ontology-summit] mailing list pretty soon. We shall look forward to
your contribution and your insights here. (05)
Our OntologySummit2013 session-02 on "(Track-B) Extrinsic Aspects of
Ontology Evaluation," co-chaired by Mr. Terry Longstreth and Dr. Todd
Schneider, will be coming up next Thursday, 24 Jan 2013 (same time
slot as the Launch session). We will look forward to seeing all of you
there! (06)
Thanks & regards. =ppy (07)

********************* Details ************************ (030)
This is our 8th Ontology Summit, a joint initiative by ONTOLOG, NIST,
NCOR, NCBO, IAOA & NCO_NITRD with the support of our co-sponsors. The
theme adopted for this Ontology Summit is: "Ontology Evaluation Across
the Ontology Lifecycle." In an earlier planning session last month,
the community and subsequently, the summit organizing team
brainstormed on how best to frame the issues. These inputs were
carefully reviewed and synthesized by the Ontology Summit Organizing
Committee and its leadership. It is this plan and program that we will
be discussing with everyone during the launch event. (031)
Currently, there is no agreed methodology for development of
ontologies, and there are no universally agreed metrics for ontology
evaluation. At the same time, everybody agrees that there are a lot of
badly engineered ontologies out there, thus people use -- at least
implicitly -- some criteria for the evaluation of ontologies. (032)
During the next 3 to 4 months (16 weeks, to be exact) when the Summit
is in session, we seek to identify best practices for ontology
development and evaluation. We will consider the entire lifecycle of
an ontology -- from requirements gathering and analysis, through to
design and implementation. In this endeavor, the Summit will seek
collaboration with the software engineering and knowledge acquisition
communities. Research in these fields has led to several mature models
for the software lifecycle and the design of knowledge-based systems,
and we expect that fruitful interaction among all participants will
lead to a consensus for a methodology within ontological engineering.
Following earlier Ontology Summit practice, the synthesized results of
this season's discourse will be published as a Communique. (033)
--- (034)
These sessions, like all Ontolog virtual events, are open and free of
charge. Anyone who is interested, or (better still) who may have
something to contribute, is welcome. Please refer to event details on
the session pages, to which the hyperlink is given above, where you
will find session agenda, conference call dial-in, slides and other
pertinent information. Feel free to pass this invitation along to
colleagues who may also find these sessions to be of interest. (035)
*RSVP* by emailing Peter Yim at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline (or add
yourself directly to the session page if you are already an Ontolog or
Ontology Summit community member) so that we can prepare enough
resources to support everyone. [Please state clearly the date of the
session you are registering for in your email.] ... All respondents
will be subscribed (if they aren't already so) to the
[ontology-summit] mailing list so they are participate in the virtual
discourse. (036)
These sessions will be recorded and made available in a publicly
accessible archive. Therefore, before participating, please make sure
you are cognizant of our IPR policy (ref:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid32). (037)
